The Abyss Classic is Seth Baccus’ take on the classic doublecut guitar – familiar territory, but with the sort of thoughtful details and superb build quality that make Seth’s guitars feel very much their own thing.
This one is a particularly cool HSS build, pairing a Bare Knuckle PolyPAF humbucker at the bridge with two of Seth’s Bare Knuckle’s new Desert Rose single coils. It’s a hugely versatile combination, with plenty of vintage-inspired clarity and character from the single coils and a little more muscle available from the bridge without upsetting the balance of the guitar.
The lightweight Obeche body is finished in a superb creamy Heavy Aged White over Sunburst, with the wear revealing the burst underneath and giving the guitar the look of something that’s already lived a fairly interesting life. The slim, beautifully flamed maple neck adds to what is a seriously good overall spec, completed by a Callaham trem with Highwood saddles.
More importantly, it’s an exceptionally lively guitar. Light in the hands, very resonant and responsive acoustically, with that immediate, energetic feel that usually tells you you’re holding a good one before you’ve even plugged it in.
Interestingly, the specification closely follows an Abyss recently commissioned from Seth by guitarist Danny Delacruz – a pretty good endorsement of this particular combination of ingredients.
A seriously cool Abyss: versatile without being generic, beautifully put together and with bags of character before you even get to that wonderfully battered White-over-Sunburst finish.
